Lionel Andrés Messi is an Argentinean football player who plays for FC Barcelona in the Spanish Primera División (first division). He is also a member of the Argentine national team. He has been compared to the most talented players such as Diego Maradona, and even Maradona himself named Messi his “successor”. 
Lionel Messi was born on June 24^th 1987 in Rosario city, Argentina. He started playing football for a club coached by his father (called Grandoli) at the age of five. Messi switched to Newell's Old Boys football club in 1995 and a few years later he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency. River Plate sports club was following Messi's progress, but did not have enough money to pay for the treatment of the illness that cost over £500 a month. Carles Rexach, the sporting manager of FC Barcelona, heard about Messi's talent, and Barcelona signed him after Rexach watched him play. The club offered to pay for the medical bills if he was willing to move and start a new life in Spain. The young player along with his family moved to Europe and he starred in the club’s youth teams. Messi is famous for his speed with or without the ball, his outstanding dribbling skills, going past defenders and his finishing.
Messi made his first appearance on the senior Argentine national team on August 17^th 2005 against Hungary and had competed in his first international competition on September 3^rd in Argentina's 0-1 World Cup qualifier loss against Paraguay.
